The Uncertain Future of Global Climate Change Commitments

  • 1. ROR icon Phenikaa University

Description

In a world struggling with the urgent need to combat climate change, nations have made significant commitments to reduce emissions and mitigate environmental impacts. These commitments are crucial to achieving the goals set by the Paris Agreement, aimed at limiting global warming to below 2°C. Despite these commitments, the situation remains far from optimistic as total emissions have continued to reach new peaks since 1990 . In 2023, the Antarctica witnessed its lowest recorded levels of sea ice ever, while the International Energy Agency predicts that CO2 emissions will again hit record level in 2023, with the exact peak remaining uncertain. Alongside these challenges, there are risks and obstacles that could potentially hinder nations, even leading to failure in fulfilling their climate commitments. This article will examine some of the primary risks and challenges that have the potential to obstruct emission reduction targets as pledged. These insights can serve as a warning of the difficulties that nations have faced, are facing, and will continue to face in fulfilling their climate commitments.
