The research group SMIT, established in 1990 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB, Belgium) and also part of the large Flemish research institute IMEC, specializes in social scientific research on media and ICT.  We are one of the largest and best recognised groups in Europe in the field of digital media & society, consisting of around 160 people in 2025. SMIT’s mission statement is to “make technology society-proof”. Our goal is to understand the impact of digital media on everyday practices (media and technology use, business practices, well-being and work) and create design, strategy and policy guidelines to shape responsible innovation, thus empowering people and society. To do this, SMIT research combines user, business and policy analysis with both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
