The second stage of MISOMIP activities (MISOMIP2, which started in 2019) proposes standalone ocean and ice experiments, as well as coupled ice-ocean experiments. Previous acronyms MISMIP+ and ISOMIP+ will be discontinued, and all experiments are collectively referred to as MISOMIP2. Experiments will use realistic geometries and forcing, with particular focus on the Amundsen and Weddell seas. We invite contributions from global and regional ocean model configurations, if ice shelves are included. We invite contributions from circum-Antarctic or regional ice model setups, with a basal melt parameterization of your choice. We adopt a ‘come as you are’ approach, with an option for common experiments. The project will assemble and provide a 'MIPkit' alongside the publication of the experimental protocol. The MIPkit will contain pre-gridded data of ocean and ice observations for model-data comparison, as well as Python and Matlab packages for basic pre-processing and plotting of MISOMIP2 output. Further details will be made available at a later stage. A publication that outlines the experimental design is currently in preparation, with the table below summarising the basic framework.
MISOMIP2 is led by Jan De Rydt (U. Northumbria, UK), Nicolas Jourdain (IGE-CNRS-UGA, France), Yoshihiro Nakayama (Hokkaido U., Japan), Ralph Timmermann (AWI, Germany), and Mathias van Caspel (AWI, Germany).
