NILU's (www.nilu.no) department for Environmental Impacts & Sustainability (IMPACT) focuses on the development and application of multidisciplinary approaches to facilitate the green transition towards achieving and creating a sustainable environment, society and circular economy.
The departments works to evaluate solutions to protect the environment (minimizing the emissions of pollutants and biodiversity loss), while considering social and economic impacts. The deparment develops and applies (a) methodologies used in industrial ecology and ecological economics to understand the impacts of anthropogenic activities on the environment (e.g., material flow analysis, life cycle assessment and environmental footprinting and modelling), (b) integrated assessment modeling to assess how anthropogenic activities interact with ecosystems and the environment, (c) socio-economic modelling for evaluating the societal impacts of our choices and decisions (e.g. through Computable general equilibrium (CGE) models), and (d) data-driven digital solutions to assess and improve the sustainability and circularity of products and value chains. In addition, IMPACT researchers support various projects at NILU regarding citizen science, urban sustainability, air quality assessment and management.
