Compartmental Autoimmunity: Convergent Pathways is a curated Zenodo community for preprints, theoretical papers, and research manuscripts exploring a specific mechanistic convergence: autoimmunity can emerge when intense immunostimulation coincides with a persistent infection, or with the tissue damage it induces, in a susceptible host and in a compartment where immunological tolerance is already vulnerable. The infection marks the target; the immunostimulant pulls the trigger.
This framing brings together two lines of work that are usually studied in isolation:
- Infectious and dysbiotic pathways — persistent infection or pathogen-driven barrier/tissue damage as the source of local tolerance breakdown.
- Excipient-mediated iatrogenic pathways — adjuvant/excipient-driven transcytosis, protein corona formation, and immune amplification as the source of intense immunostimulation.
The community's interest is in what happens at their intersection: compartments (blood-brain barrier, blood-follicle barrier, mucosal/gut barriers, and related sites) where these two factors — stimulation and susceptibility — coincide.
