About the Decentralized Institutes of Health
The Decentralized Institutes of Health (DIH) is an initiative dedicated to accelerating medical research and making cures more accessible to all people worldwide.
Our Mission
We work to transform the clinical research landscape by promoting low-cost pragmatic clinical trials that can deliver faster, more affordable results. Our goal is to redirect resources toward finding cures and treatments for the billions of people suffering from diseases with inadequate treatment options.
The Problem
Traditional clinical trials are prohibitively expensive, costing an average of $41,000 per participant. This high cost excludes 85% of patients from participating and concentrates research on only 5% of known diseases. Meanwhile, no major disease has been cured in over 44 years, and an estimated 21,000-120,000 preventable deaths occur per decade due to regulatory delays.
Our Solution
The DIH advocates for pragmatic clinical trial methodologies, inspired by successful models like the Oxford Recovery Trial, which demonstrated that rigorous research can be conducted for approximately $500 per participant—82 times less expensive than traditional trials.
We support the "1% Treaty" proposal: redirecting just 1% of global military spending to fund pragmatic clinical trials that enable universal patient participation and accelerate the discovery of cures.
