This community presents the proceedings of the fifteenth edition of the Interdisciplinary Symposium Automation in Medical Engineering (AUTOMED 2021), which took place from 08. – 09. June 2021. The Symposium was organized by the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel. 

AUTOMED 2021 is a key symposium of the Fachausschuss of DGBMT/GMA in VDI/VDE and provided exclusive insights into current trends of automation in medical engineering and offered a forum for new research results in this field. The interdisciplinary orientation of the event is intended to deepen existing and to create new synergies between technical and medical sciences.

The AUTOMED 2021 was embedded in the first edition of the hybrid Medical Robotics Week (MRW) 2021 - the first week of its kind dedicated to robotics in Basel. Besides AUTOMED 2021, the seventh edition of the International Workshop on New Trends in Medical and Service Robots (MESROB 2021) took place from 07. – 9. June 2021 virtually. The MESROB 2021 was an established conference of the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM).
