The Amsterdam Time Machine (ATM) is a public research resource on the history of Amsterdam. ATM is committed to the creation and reuse of historical data for the benefit of – and together with – researchers, societal partners, and local communities. In order to make such scalable research possible, the ATM aims to systematically collect all available data on historical Amsterdam from heterogeneous sources, and link them to maps and 3D models. This way, locations act as anchor points to contextualize persons, objects, and events that have contributed to making the history of the city throughout time. An exploration of data that combines both their spatial and temporal dimensions becomes possible. Users will ultimately be able to travel back in time and navigate the city on the levels of neighborhoods, streets, houses, rooms, even zooming in on the pictures that adorned the walls.
ATM is based on a linked and open structure and collaborates closely with other Dutch Time Machines, as a proud member of Time Machine Organization. This ensures that the Amsterdam data is connected across the Netherlands and abroad. Just as the city itself has always been.
