Data paper: a key research output to powering up FAIR data

  • 1. Universidade da Coruña

Description

A data article is a brief type of paper whose main objective is to describe a dataset generated and used in a research process, to encourage FAIR data, reproducibility and reusability. Although this research output has a great potential for open science, it is a document type not well known among researchers, according to our own experience as data stewards at our institution.

With the objective of giving literacy to the research community about data papers and encouraging its creation as a good open science practice, our poster will answer five questions:

  • What is a data paper?
  • What is their current status?
  • Why to publish a data paper?
  • Where to publish a data paper?
  • Where to find support?

By giving a response to these questions, our poster would comply with a double finality:

On the one hand, it aims to explain the main characteristics and advantages of data papers to the research community. In addition, we want to present some interesting information about data papers: evolution of published items in recent years, percentage of data papers on open access and top funders. We have also identified the different names used by journals to refer to this research output.

On the other hand, we provide a link to a list of journals where to read and submit this document type. This dataset has been created by our team, is available at a trusted repository under a Creative Commons license and is updated regularly.

In conclusion, data papers can be considered a good practice in open science and are a further step to make research reproducible and data FAIRer. All these benefits must be known by the research community. Data stewards and libraries could guide them across this open science ecosystem, which includes new research outputs, such as data papers.
