Description

Genus Calyria Stål, 1862

Cicada (Calyria) Stål 1862: 22.

Type species. Cicada (Calyria) blanda Stål 1862: 22. (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

Remarks. Species of Calyria can be distinguished from other Venezuelan genera by the five hind wing apical cells. In addition, the ocelli are well separated from the base of the head, and there is an indistinct postcostal area of the fore wing (Distant 1906). Additional diagnostic structures for the genus are the flattened ventrolateral postclypeus without an obvious apical extension and the lateral surfaces of the pronotum are parallel for most of their length.

Distribution. The genus is found over much of Central and South America with species of the genus being reported from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela (Metcalf 1963b; Maes et al. 2012; Sanborn 2013; 2014; 2018; 2019a; 2020; Sanborn & Maes 2012; Sanborn & Heath 2014).
