O Roteiro do Manuscrito de Valentim Fernandes
One of the aims of the RUTTER Project is to make available transcriptions of 15th and 16th-century rutters, thus furthering the basics of research with quality reference texts. The manuscript rutter here presented, associated to the German printer Valentim Fernandes (ca. 1450–1519), is the earliest known Portuguese rutter. It includes two titles, “Este livro é de rotear” (“This book is about navigating”) and “O livro das Rotas do Castelo de São Jorge” (“The book of routes of St George’s castle”).
The original document of this Valentim Fernandes’ manuscript is preserved at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, under the shelfmark Hss Cod.hisp. 27 (permalink: https://opacplus.bsb- muenchen.de/title/BV022248171). It is 336 folios long, including among other works a “Descriptio Africae”. Our present transcription comprises only from 292r to 315r.
