Sexual orientation and gender identity in the Belgian asylum system

Description

The research considers the experiences of people who apply for international protection in Belgium on the ground of their sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). Participatory observations, semi-structured interviews and focus groups reveal the diverse and multi-layered experiences of SOGI applicants: navigating intersectional discrimination, waiting in reception centres, looking for support with LGBTIQ+ organisations, and going to the asylum interview. Their perception of  sexuality, gender, refugeeness and Belgium are (re-)shaped by their interactions with the different actors and contexts they encounter while moving through the asylum system.
