Research protocol: Suicidal ideation and associations with mental health service utilization, suicide attempts and suicide
Description
This poster outlines the protocol for a longitudinal study which uses a large community-representative survey – the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) – and which follows respondents who expressed suicidal ideation after 1, 3 and 5 years, to examine their outcomes in terms of:
-Mental health service utilization; and
-Suicide attempts / suicides
The CCHS presents an opportunity to study the responses of 18,700 Canadians who live in the province of Ontario. This Ontario study will use CCHS survey data which have been linked to health administration and mortality data.
The study will explore the mediating effects of having mental and substance use disorders.
The study aims to advance a nuanced understanding of the morbid risk of people with suicidal ideation in the general population.
