Description
Grypiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1935
Grypiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1935: 415.
Cycloramphus fuliginosus Tschudi, 1838 — Bokermann (1951: 81).
Current name. Cycloramphus brasiliensis (Steindachner, 1864)— New synonymy.
Synonymy. Name proposed as a junior synonym (“ nomen novum ”) for Cyclorhamphus [sic] pinderi sensu A. Lutz, 1929 (non Iliodiscus pinderi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920), according to Bokermann (1966: 69). Synonymized with Cycloramphus fuliginosus Tschudi, 1838 by Bokermann (1951: 81), without comments. However, A. Lutz (1929: 10) clearly associated his specimen and name to “ Cyclorhamphus pinderi Mir. -Rib.”, currently synonymized with Cycloramphus brasiliensis (Steindachner, 1864) by Heyer (1983: 264, 295). We agree with this synonymy and, accordingly, currently Grypiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1935 is a junior synonym of Cycloramphus brasiliensis (Steindachner, 1864), but see below.
Types. Not designated. Treating on Cyclorhamphus pinderi, A. Lutz (1929: 11) refers to “um exemplar da Serra de Macahé” (freely translated as “ one specimen from the Macaé Mountain”) and that “o exemplar da mesma procedência, pertencente ao Museu Paulista e considerado cotypo ...” (freely translated, “the specimen of the same origin, belonging to the Museu Paulista and considered cotype ...”). Miranda-Ribeiro (1935: 415) stated “typo Instit. Osw. Cruz” (“ type Oswaldo Cruz Institute”, currently AL-MN).
The syntype originally in the AL-MN collection was not located and is considered lost. The cotype of Cycloramphus pinderi mentioned by A. Lutz (1929) at the same time holotype of Iliodiscus pinderi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 is the specimen MZUSP 1008 (Heyer, 1983: 295). As a nomen novum, Grypiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1935 was formally based on the same type specimen of Cycloramphus pinderi studied by A. Lutz (1929). Here we designate the specimen MZUSP 1008 (Fig. 6), currently the holotype of Iliodiscus pinderi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920, as the lectotype of Grypiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1935. Therefore, Iliodiscus pinderi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 and Grypiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1935 become objective synonyms, and both are junior synonyms of Cycloramphus brasiliensis (Steindachner, 1864).
Type locality. Miranda-Ribeiro (1935: 415) referred to “Raiz da Serra, Petropolis” (“Base of the Mountain, Petrópolis”). In turn, A. Lutz (1929: 9) cited “numerosos adultos e posturas procedendo de um lugar da Serra de Petropolis que pode ter cerca de 800 m de altura” (freely translated, “several adults and spawnings coming from one site of the Petrópolis Mountains which can have about 800 m altitude”). It is currently impossible to determine the precise point where the specimens were collected.
However, by the designation of the lectotype, the type locality currently becomes that of the lectotype (ICZN, 1999: “Article 76.2. Type locality determined by the lectotype: The place of origin of the lectotype becomes the type locality of the nominal species-group taxon, despite any previously published statement of the type locality.”) Accordingly, the type locality of Iliodiscus pinderi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 [Serra de Macaé, Municipality of Nova Friburgo (22º18’S, 42º32’W; Datum WGS 84; 950 m a.s.l.), State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil], as discussed and defined by Bokermann (1951: 84; 1966: 69) and followed by Heyer (1983: 264), is also the type locality of Grypiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1935.
