Description
This poster presentation will present the results of the citizen science activity "Self-help and well-being in an academic online environment", which focuses on scientific sources in open access. The activity was organized by the National and University Library in Zagreb in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities and Social sciences in Rijeka as part of the Croatian Book Month and the international open science and citizen science project CeOS_SE. The idea of holding this activity came from the motto of the 2022 Croatian Book Month, "Think about yourself – read", which focused on the mental health of young people. Students participated in the activity and searched the Portal of Croatian Scientific and Professional Journals Hrčak using the keywords self-help, well-being, and bibliotherapy. The students searched, selected, and collected data, including the article ID, article name, article URL, author, name of the journal, year of publication, language, keywords, and the number of views of the article record in relation to the number of searches. This method is called crowdsourcing and represents the first level of citizen science. The activity is related to one of the UN's sustainable development goals (Goal 3: health and well-being) and at the same time highlights the importance of open access and open science and independent information search. The poster presentation will show how topics such as self-help, well-being, and bibliotherapy are represented in Croatian scientific publications in open access. The importance of open science in publishing and sharing important and relevant information will be emphasized. Theoretical part of the research presents the concept of self-help as a cultural phenomenon which is studied through self-help books as texts that give advices for almost every aspects of life. Considering there is hiperproduction of the self-help discourse in public discourse, this paper analyses conditions that enabled birth and development of such specific outlook on life.
