Description

The chemistry–climate model SOCOL version 3 (SOCOLv3) consists of the middle-atmosphere general circulation model (MA-GCM) ECHAM and a modified version of the chemistry-transport model (CTM) MEZON (Egorova et al., 2003; Schraner et al., 2008). The MA-GCM and CTM are interactively coupled via the exchange by the 3-dimensional fields of temperature and wind (from MA-GCM to CTM) and by the concentrations of radiatively active water vapor, ozone, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons (from CTM to MA-GCM).

SOCOLv3 has 39 vertical levels (from the surface up to 0.01 hPa) and can be used with two horizontal resolutions (T31 and T42). The model can be run very efficiently in parallel mode.

The model performance was successfully evaluated in the framework of International CCM Intercomparison projects: CCMVal2 (Eyring et al., 2008) and CCMI-1 (Hegglin et al., 2015). A detailed description of SOCOLv3 can be found in (Stenke et al., 2013).
