United Front Election of 1954: The Struggle for Democracy
Authors/Creators
Description
A significant period in the history of the battle for independence in East Bengal is the election of 1954 and the creation of the United Front. This election served as a "ballot revolution" against the Muslim League leadership's actions against the Bengali people, their language, culture, and history, as well as against the six years of Pakistani authorities' abuse of them. Even after creating the government, the United Front was unable to hold onto power due to the plots and anti-democratic actions of Pakistan's ruling class. Despite this government's failure, the 1954 elections gave political parties a chance to gauge public support. Consequently, this election will have a significant impact on Pakistan's national politics.
