"Exploring Rewards and Incentives": Assessing Research Profiles and Shifting Towards Open Science

In this session on Rewards and Incentives, attendees get to be an assessor and grant funding to one of the research profiles presented to them (1 out of 4 success rate). The funding was granted in two rounds: in the first round assessment was based on the current assessment criteria (pro-funder; mainly focussed on impact metrics) and in the second round based on the dream of incentivizing Open Science (pro-Open Science). The four research profiles included: (1) a profile with hidden pro-Open Science (not sharing your data for a good reason (patents) but has an open attitude towards open science and wants to share and benefit society when possible), (2) a clear profile of pro-Open Science, (3) a mixed profile heading more to pro-funder - (includes citizen science, but doesn’t dare to share but should at least share her metadata or pseudonymized sensitive data), and (4) a clear pro-funder profile which is highly valued at the moment. After granting the funding, the attendees discussed who was granted the funding in each round and debated on the shift that needs to be made to value Open Science output and efforts.
