Taxonomy. Original description: Nemacheilus turcmenicus Berg, 1932: 149, fig. 1 [Kelte-chinar River (Cherokh River) near Gyaurs (37°47‘N, 58°44‘E), Turkmenistan; syntypes: ZIN 11064 (3)].— Afghanistan synonyms: None.—Revisions: Berg (1949: 876) as synonym of Nemacheilus sargadensis Nikolskii, 1900; Freyhof et al. (2015: 17).—Illustration: Berg (1932: fig. 1) as Nemacheilus turcmenicus.

Status in Afghanistan. This species not recorded from Afghanistan, however, it is distributed in joining waterways with Afghanistan (Coad 1995; Mousavi Sabet et al. 2015,).—Afghanistan materials: None.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Murgab River.—General distribution: Middle East, northern-central Asia and South Asia: Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Iran.—Habitat: This species occurs in streams with moderately to fast flowing freshwater in both mountainous and lowlands. Freshwater.

Economic importance. No commercial importance.

Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: NE (2023).—Threats: Unknown— Moderate sensitivity to human activities.—Keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Moderate priority for conservation action.
