Description
A repair solution for fatigue cracks in steel structures using adhesively bonded iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA) strips and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets (Fe-SMA/CFRP bonded patches) was developed. The patches can self-prestress through an activation process (a heating and cooling process). An experimental study was conducted, wherein cracked steel plates were repaired with the Fe-SMA/CFRP bonded patches, and fatigue tests were performed. Test results showed that the Fe-SMA/CFRP bonded patches prolonged the fatigue life of cracked steel plates by more than 5 times, and in some cases a complete crack arrest was achieved.
