Nitzschia vidovichii Grunow 1862

Authors/Creators

Description

69. Nitzschia vidovichii (Grunow) Grunow (Figs 144, 145)

Basionym: Homoeocladia vidovichii (widowichii) Grunow.

Type locality: Adriatic Sea.

References: Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 1988, pl. 18, fig. 6; Witkowski et al. 2000, p. 409, pl. 201, figs 2, 3; Navarro & Lobban 2009, p. 147, figs 102–104; Lobban et al. 2012, p. 338; Stidolph et al. 2012, pl. 25, fig. 92.

Morphometrics: Valves 57–74 (88–120) μm long, 7.2–8.2 (7–9) μm wide, fibulae 7 (5–8) in 10 μm, and transapical striae 25–26 (24–28) in 10 μm.

Remarks: This taxon is similar to Nitzschia scalpelliformis (Grunow) Grunow in dimensions and morphology of valves. The valve ends of the latter are obtuse, but unilaterally oblique, and the ends of the former are not oblique and slightly produced. As a result, the keel of the latter species is at the margin of valve, but the keel of the former species longitudinally in the middle. Furthermore, the transapical striae are coarser (24–28: 27–38 in 10 μm) in N. vidovichii.

Nitzschia vidovichii has been reported in some temperate regions (Peragallo and Peragallo 1897–1908), but most of it has been known in warmer regions, South Africa (Giffen 1967), Tanzania (Foged 1975), Palawan in Philippines (Podzorski & Håkansson 1987), Guam (Navarro & Lobban 2009), Society Islands, Mahé and Caribbean Sea (Lobban et al. 2012).

This species was already reported in the estuary of a stream in the eastern coast of South Korea (Lee et al. 1994), and rare as epiphytes on seaweeds in Seogwipo coast.
