Description

15. Amphitetras antediluviana Ehrenberg (Figs 22–24)

Synonym: Triceratium antediluvianum (Ehrenberg) Grunow; Biddulphia antediluviana (Ehrenberg) Van Heurck.

LectoType locality: Marine coastal locality at the Isle Tj ̂rn, SW Sweden, designated by Jahn & Kusber (2006).

References: Hustedt 1927 –1930, p. 810, fig. 472; Jahn & Kusber 2006, p. 528, figs 1–5.

Morphometrics: Valves 39–42 (25–130) μm long, areolae 4–5 (3–5) in 10 μm.

Remarks: Amphitetras antediluviana is distributed in the littoral area along the marine coasts of European Atlantic Ocean to western coast of Norway (Hustedt 1927 –1930), and in the Mediterranean (Rivera-González & Sánchez-Castillo 2011). This taxon has been reported from many localities: Belize in the Caribbean Sea (Hargraves 1982), Vero Beach in Florida (Mahoney & Gibson 1983), Cuba (Foged 1984), Chubut Province in Argentina (Ferrario & Ferreyra 1986), Mauritania in West Africa (Sterrenburg & Sterrenburg 1990), and the Suez canal lakes and adjacent areas of Egypt (Zalat 2002). It is listed on the diatom catalogue of the Caribbean Sea (Navarro & Hernández-Becerril 1997). Although this species originates from Sweden and occurs in European coasts such as the Mediterranean, it has a much higher incidence in subtropical or tropical areas. It was encountered in seveal places of rock pools along the Seogwipo coast in Jeju Island, representing a new record for South Korea.
