Description
3. Imperata minutiflora Hackel (1889: 100)
Type (lectotype, designated here): — PERU. Lima, L.D. Barranca s.n., W [W 1916-0034721, digital image!]. Remaining syntype: PERU. Lima, C. Gaudichaud-Beaupré s.n., B [not seen, probably destroyed] (Fig. 5).
Notes: —In the protologue of Imperata minutiflora, Hackel (1889: 100) cited two collections from Lima, Peru: Gaudichaud-Beaupré s.n. (B) and Barranca s.n. (W) [“Gaudich. in h. ber., Barranca in. h. vind.”]. However, as he did not specify which one is the holotype, both are considered syntypes according to Art. 9.6 of the ICN (Turland et al. 2018). The Gaudichaud-Beaupré collection was not found in B herbarium. According to the curator of this herbarium, the material was probably destroyed in World War II (Juraj Paule, pers. comm.). It is known that several B herbarium specimens were indeed destroyed during World War II, including types (Merrill 1943). On the other hand, Filgueiras (2003) and TROPICOS (2023) cited specimens of the Barranca collection deposited in C, US, and W herbaria. One of the specimens found at W (sheet W1916-0034721) has the Barranca collector indicated on the herbarium label, without any collector number, in agreement with the information presented in the protologue of I. minutiflora (Hackel 1889). On this exsiccate, it is clearly stated that the material is from E. Hackel herbarium. A small envelope with the words “Lima, Guadichaud” and “ Imperata caudata var.” handwritten [with the latter two words crossed out] is also affixed to this sheet, which may represent a fragment from the specimen Gaudichaud-Beaupré s.n. (B). The other specimen of the Barranca collection found at W (sheet W0028476) and the one from US (barcode US 01050245 / catalog number US- 2942433) have the Barranca collector indicated on the herbarium labels, along with the collector number “524”. Because of this, we are not sure whether these two specimens are indeed duplicates of the same collection performed by Barranca. According to the collection manager of C herbarium, a duplicate of the Barranca collection is not deposited in C (Olof Ryding, pers. comm.). In view of the above, we designate here the specimen Barranca s.n. (W – sheet W1916-0034721) as the lectotype of Imperata minutiflora (Fig. 5).
