Automatic classification of historical texts using a BERT model: news about wild berries, 1860-1910

This paper presents, applies, and evaluates a method of automatic classification of historical texts using the BERT language model as part of a history research case. The case concerns commodification of wild nature, and the model is used to classify a corpus of 19th century Finnish newspaper articles about the use of wild berries.
