Description

Humanity has been prioritized right from Sangam literature to today's Tamil literature. “Manimegalai”, one of the five great epic poems, underpins Buddhism and emphasizes education, asceticism, courage, utility, this life, the afterlife, government, and people, but it emphasizes humanity the most. “Manimegalai” is created with simplicity and aesthetics. It explains the love of other lives, alleviation of hunger, highlighting impermanence and maintaining public welfare without selfishness. Although the purpose of the book is to highlight Buddhist religious concepts, the core material of the book highlights humanity, compassion for life, maintenance of common welfare and religious commonality through the character of Manimegalai. The character Manimegalai describes the effort to overcome the narrow-mindedness of human life and to reach the vast and limitless human being. The psychological background of the character Manimegalai travels beyond the home and into the social space is set in the period when women had few opportunities to come out and engage in public charity. It can be seen that “Manimegalai” is an epic that teaches the principles of Buddhism and aims at the well-being of human society.
