Description

A nosocomial infection also called hospital-acquired infection can be defined as an infection acquired in a hospital by a patient who was admitted for a reason other than that infection. Infection occurs in a patient in a hospital or other healthcare facility in whom the infection was not present or incubating at the time of admission. This includes infections acquired in the hospital but appearing after discharge, and also occupational infections among the staff of the facility. Nosocomial infections or healthcare-associated infections occur in patients under medical care. These infections occur worldwide both in developed and developing countries. Nosocomial infections account for 7% of developed and 10% of developing countries.
