FIGURE 6. Geographic and stratigraphic distribution of species found in the lower Pliocene Zanclean of Santa Maria Island, Azores. For Pliocene-recent geographic distribution designated by biogeographical province: 1 = Boreal-Celtic Province, 2 = French-Iberian Province, 3 = Mediterranean-Moroccan Province, 4 = Mauritanian-Senegalese Province (see Figure 5A). For stratigraphic distribution black signifies Atlantic distribution (A), grey Mediterranean distribution (M). Names in bold, occurrences confirmed by collections consulted (DBUA-F collections), names in normal font, historical records not confirmed by subsequent sampling.
