Moishe Postone is responsible for an intriguing Marxist critique of dominant
interpretations in the field of Marxism. This dissertation is dedicated to discussing
Postone's contribution. We will argue, in particular, that Postone's emphasis on the
historically specific character arises from his important analysis of antisemitism and
Nazism. The first part of this dissertation is devoted to presenting this analysis,
emphasizing the limits identified by Postone in the reactions to the "Holocaust" after
the defeat of fascism. We show how Postone's characteristic arguments first appear in
this discussion. In the second part of this dissertation, we will demonstrate how
Postone reinterprets Capital with an "emphasis on the historically specific," highlighting
the importance of historical determination in the reading of Capital. In section 2.1, we
address the ramifications of the commodity in Capital for a better understanding of
Postone's critique. In the final section, we provide an initial analysis of chapter four,
"Abstract Labor," which highlights the importance of the historically determined in the
face of the trans-historicity of labor.
