Description

The aim of the research is to consider metaphors that are most frequently used in English educational discourse and to trace what views on teaching, learning, teacher and learner these metaphors reflect. Articles by different educationalists occupy a borderline position between scientific and educational discourse combining characteristic features of the two. Metaphoric models in them influence educational discourse as they can represent contemporary views on the process of education and the roles of teacher and learner or produce distorted images thus sharing outdated and often harmful ideas.

Metaphors under analysis have different source domains: gardening, sports, travelling, arts, industrial production, military sphere etc and emphasize different aspects of education and teacher’s responsibilities.   Evaluative connotations of the metaphoric nominations of teacher’s profession may differ greatly as well. Metaphors play an important role as they can provide better understanding of the essence of the main concepts of education and clearly see its contemporary challenges.
