Description

This work aims to discuss the preliminary results of a doctoral research that have as their theme Korovai, a kind of bread made by immigrants and descendants of Ukrainian origin traditionally served in specific ceremonies, such as ordination of priests, anniversaries of priestly life and matrimonial and, mainly, at wedding parties, which will be analyzed in this research. Paraná, a state in the south of Brazil, was marked by Ukrainian immigration between the end of the 19th century, and after the Second World War, Ukrainian descendants continue to preserve their cultural heritage. The objective of this research is to analyze those cultural practices from 1960 to 2019 in Ivaí and Irati, municipalities located in the southeast of Paraná, where many descendants of Slavic groups reside, in this case, Ukrainians. The research aims to understand why Ukrainian descendants perpetuate these traditions, changes and permanencies, what meanings are given to these traditions and how, or if they collaborate to build an identity (cultural and/or ethnic) among its practitioners. Our main sources are interviews constructed through the methodology of Oral History.
