Show Me the Data: Evaluating User Engagement with an Institutional Data Catalog for an Academic Medical Center

Data catalogs can promote the FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) guiding principles by extending the reach of shared data. When research faculty at NYU Langone Health expressed a need for an institutional resource to help them locate and access secondary data as well as share their own data, developers at the NYU Health Sciences Library produced the NYU Data Catalog. While the catalog does not house data, it is an online, public-facing platform that connects researchers to data resources and permits researchers to control access to data that they share. The catalog does not duplicate indexing of all faculty datasets that have been deposited in public repositories such the Sequence Read Archive or Gene Expression Omnibus, but contains a curated selection of resources that are recommended by contributing faculty. This poster, presented at the AMIA 2023 Informatics Summit, presents an evaluation project which utilized catalog metadata and information collected through web analytics to understand data-seeking and sharing practices through the NYU Data Catalog.
