Description

Macrocheilus quadrinotatus Burgeon, 1937

Figs. 9h, i, 10d, 14b

Studied material. 1 female: “W. Darfur ” (white label) (MRAC); 1 female: “6/ 7.XI.2011 Angola Huíla \ Province 20 km S. Caluquembe \ P. Sch ̧le leg.” \\ “Macr-11” (yellow label) \\ “ Macrocheilus \ quadrinotatus \ Burgeon, 1937 ” [h]\ A.Serrano det. 2021” [t] [h]; 1 female: “ Kibundi (15 km N\ Nambua). Malanje,\ Angola, 19.XI.2017, A.\ Serrano & R. Capela leg.” \\ “ 8º 54′ 33.31′′ S \ 16º 3′ 15.71′′ E \ 1170 m ” \\ “ Macrocheilus \ quadrinotatus \ Burgeon” [h]\ “ A.Serrano det. 2021” [t] [h].

Remarks. The species was known only from Republic Democratic of the Congo (Burgeon 1937; Häckel & Farkač 2013). In the Angolan females studied, the head and pronotum are blackish, contrarily to the original description (brownish) (see Figs. 9h, i). However, both specimens fit very well all the remaining morphological characters of the holotype, including the special conformation of mentum of M. quadrinotatus [see final comment on this character provided by Burgeon (1937)]. The female adult specimen of Darfur was determined by P. Basilewsky. The male genitalia is unknown, but the collection of female specimens allowed the description of female genitalia for the first time. The known distribution in Democratic Republic of the Congo and the new records for Angola and Sudan indicates a scattered distribution in Africa.

Female genitalia (Fig. 14b). Gonocoxite 1 subtriangular; gonocoxite 2 very largely sickle shaped, apex hardly acuminate; outer margin slightly expanded in the middle region, dorsal surface concave, almost all covered with numerous setae, several setae inserted on an outer sub marginal longitudinal rib, subapical inner margin with two setae; ventral surface convex, smooth.

Distribution. Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan.
