Description

8. * Eugenia balancanensis Lundell, Phytologia 1: 481 (1941)

EOO: 4 km ². AOO: 4 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Critically Endangered.

Eugenia balancanensis is known only from the type locality in Tabasco, specifically in the municipality of Balancán. The biome of occurrence is the Humid tropical forest. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of Critically Endangered category under the criterion B. The region where the specimen was found is 15 km from the conservation area known as the “Flora and Fauna Protection Area Cañón del Usumacinta” (CONANP 2015a). There is only one known location and an inferred continuing decline of habitat due to the high anthropic impact in Balancán, mainly caused by deforestation related to agricultural activities, which has affected about half of the tropical forests area (CONABIO 2018). Therefore, Eugenia balancanensis is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) as it meets the criteria B2ab (iii).

Specimen examined:— MEXICO. Tabasco: Matuda 3361 (MEXU!).
