Statistics of Planets Orbiting Nearby Stars

Recently, a new version of the Catalog of Nearby Stars, the CNS5, has been compiled (Golovin et al. 2023), including all known stars and brown dwarfs possibly closer than 25 pc to the Sun. Here we focus on the known exoplanets orbiting CNS5 catalog stars. The restriction of the stellar sample to the solar neighbourhood lifts some of the biases of the planet detection methods with regard to stellar spectral type, and on average the planet population among these nearby stars probably better reflects the overall planet inventory in the Galaxy. As expected, the average orbital period of planets in the nearby stars sample shifts towards larger values when compared to the overall planet population. The reason for this is that the overall planet population is heavily biased towards short-period transiting planets around solar-like stars. Furthermore, many planets which are currently at the detection limit of the radial velocity method, with relatively long periods and small masses, are retained in the sample of planets around nearby stars, because these typically orbit nearby M dwarfs. A significant contribution to the planet population in the nearby stars sample is also expected from the Gaia DR3 data release.
