First report of the mammals of the Amazonian Indigenous Territory of Toñampade in Ecuador through camera traps and the application of Waodani ancestral knowledge.

TICCAs are those territories that indigenous peoples manage under their cosmovision and with their own governance system to protect biodiversity. The community of Toñampade, located in the Ecuadorian Amazon, as part of the TICCA of the Waodani people, raised the need to know the current situation of the game fauna. Thus, this work sought to document the richness and abundance of medium and large mammals, considering their high ecological and cultural value. To this end, 20 camera traps were placed in the surrounding forests from July to October 2021 by a team that included the participation of local "pikenani" wise men. Twenty-one species of medium and large strictly terrestrial wild mammals were recorded, with an effort of 1784 trap-nights (658 independent records, 99.62% sampling completeness). Species with more than 30 independent records were as follows: D. fuliginosa (120), D. tajacu (84), M. americana (80), C. paca (77), M. nemorivaga (56), T. terrestris (48) and A. microtis (34). The presence of the giant armadillo, giant anteater, puma and jaguar also stood out. In spite of being a territory of daily hunting, medium and large mammals registered a high richness. This inventory is the first step that Toñampade has taken to promote the conservation of the mastofauna and strengthen the consolidation of its ICCA. Current threats to the fauna include the lack of greater internal regulations for family hunting and the construction of a road within the territory.
