Description
Thrips setosus Moulton (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a thrips that occurs naturally in East Asia (Japan, South Korea) and Indonesia (Sumatra). In 2014, it was first detected in Europe, in the Netherlands, where it was found in several hydrangea (Hydrangea sp.) seedling production sites, under covers and in the ground. Its presence has also been found in Croatia, France, Germany and the UK, so there is reason to believe that it could become a threat in Poland, where it has not been recorded to date. The pest is not subject to compulsory control in the European Union.
T. setosus is a polyphagous species, colonizing a great many plants, mostly herbaceous. Among the important crops it attacks are bell pepper, cucumber, tobacco, peas, tomato, pumpkin, eggplant, potato and ornamentals (of the genera Chrysanthemum, Dahlia, Hippeastrum, Iris, Tagetes). It also occurs on weeds and wild plants. In addition to direct, it also causes indirect harm to plants, as it is a vector of Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV).
