Impacts of the Great Earthquake and COVID-19 pandemic on the socio-economy of the Kita-Tōhoku region (Northern Japan) estimated by nightlight image and statistical analyses

Kita-Tōhoku (北東北) region of Northern Japan experiences depopulation and aging communities. This region holds a rich potential in ecological and cultural resources, although it experienced sharp declines in the number of tourists in 2011 after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami and in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our pilot study validated that nightlight-based wealth index was well correlated with socio-economic indicators in East Africa and Brazil. We apply a similar method to estimate the socio-economic impacts of the Great Earthquake and pandemic in 15 sampled municipalities in Aomori (青森), Iwate (岩手), and Akita (秋田) prefectures.
