IGSN International Generic Sample Numbers - uniquely identifying your samples

Intoductory presentation held during the DAPHNE4NFDI TA 1 lecture series: "Data for science" on 22 November 2022. The IGSN International Generic Sample Number is a globally unique and resolvable persistent identifier for physical objects. Originally derived from the Earth sciences, PIDs for physical objects are also interesting for other domains, e.g. material sciences, life sciences. This presentation describes the origin of IGSN, its usage and metadata schema, recent projects under the umbrella of potential application of IGSN for samples of the photone and neutron community.
