Discovery of a rich population of free-floating planets in the Upper Scorpius association

Description
The first free-floating planets were discovered at the turn of the century, but the lack of large samples prevents us from better understanding their origin and properties. I will present the discovery of around a hundred free-floating planets, members of the Upper Scorpius OB association and the Ophiuchus star-forming region. These objects were identified using proper motions and photometry. We have carried out a spectroscopic campaign to confirm their youth and ultra-cool nature. This constitutes the largest homogeneous sample of free-floating planets to date, which enables many follow-up studies, such as their origin and composition.
