Description

Melursus ursinus (Shaw, 1791). Nat. Mise., 2 (unpaged) pl. 58.

TYPE LOCALITY: "Abinteriore Bengala"; restricted by Pocock (1941a) as "Patna, north of the Ganges, Bengal" [India].

DISTRIBUTION: Sri Lanka; India, north to the Indian desert and to the foothills of the Himalayas.

STATUS: CITES - Appendix I; IUCN - Vulnerable.

SYNONYMS: inornatus Pucheran, 1855; labiatus de Blainville, 1817; longirostris Tiedemann, 1820; lybius Meyer, 1793; niger Goldfuss, 1804.
