Authors/Creators

Description

Melogale I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1831. In Bélanger (ed.), Voy. Indes Orient., 3(Zoologie):129, pl. 5.[issued 13 March 1831].

TYPE SPECIES: Melogale personata I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1831.

SYNONYMS: Helictis Gray, 1831; Nesictis Thomas, 1922.

COMMENTS: There is uncertainty as to the the total number of species in this genus. Most recent authors tend to consider everetii and/ or orientalis as conspecific with personata; however, Pocock (1941a), Everts (1968), Long (1978, 1981), and Long and Killingley (1983) supported the recognition of these populations as distinct. As Long and Killingley pointed out, there is no published information to refute Pocock's (1941a) revision.
