TYPE SPECIES: Felis catus Linnaeus, 1758 (= Felis silvestris Schreber, 1775), by Linnean tautonymy (Melville and Smith, 1987).

SYNONYMS: Catolynx Severtzov, 1858; Chaus Gray, 1843; Eremaelurus Ognev, 1927; Microfelis Roberts, 1926; Otailurus Severtzov, 1858.

COMMENTS: Revised by Schwangart (1943), Pocock (1951), and Haltenorth (1953).
