Description
Chinchilla lanigera (Molina, 1782). Sagg. Stor. Nat. Chile, p. 301.
TYPE LOCALITY: Chile, Coquimbo Prov., Coquimbo.
DISTRIBUTION: N Chile, in foothills of the Andes and coastal mountains south to Coquimbo.
STATUS: CITES - Appendix I (South American populations only); IUCN - Indeterminate; Almost extinct in the wild.
SYNONYMS: chinchilla (Fischer, 1814), velligera.
