Description
Sousa chinensis (Osbeck, 1765). Reise nach Ostind. China Rostock, 1:7.
TYPE LOCALITY: China, Guangdong Prov., Zhujiang Kou (mouth of Canton River).
DISTRIBUTION: Coastal waters and rivers from Plettenberg Bay (South Africa) east to S. China and Queensland (Australia).
COMMENT: Includes borneensis, plumbea, and lentiginosa; see Rice, 1977:13. See also Perrin, 1975, Bull. Scripps Inst. Oceanogr. Univ. Calif., 21: 1 -206, who placed malayana in Stenella attenuata, as is done here; but also see Rice, 1977:13, who included malayana in this species on the advice of P.J. H. van Bree. Zhou et al., 1979, Mar. Mamm. Inf. Oregon St. Univ., Dec., p. 46, stated that plumbea (including lentiginosa) of the Indian Ocean, may be distinct from chinensis (including borneensis) of the western Pacific. Pilleri and Gihr, 1972, Invest. Cetacea, 4: 107-162, and Pilleri and Gihr, 1973 - 1974, Invest. Cetacea, 5:95-149, considered borneensis, plumbea, and lentiginosa to be distinct species. JGM, WFP and RLB followed Rice (IWC, 1975 J. Fish. Res. Bd. Can., 32) in including these taxa in chinensis.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I as Sousa spp.
ISIS NUMBER: 5301411002016002001 as S. chinensis.
