Panthera uncia

Description

Panthera uncia (Schreber, 1775). Saugethiere, 3:pl. 100 (text, 3:386, 1777).

TYPE LOCALITY: Altai Mtns. (U.S. S. R. or Mongolia).

DISTRIBUTION: Mtns, of Central Asia from Altai through the Tien Shan and Pamir Ranges to Afghanistan, Kashmir, Nepal, and parts of W. and N.C. China.

COMMENT: Type locality fixed by Pocock, 1930, J. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc., 34:332. Corbet, 1978:185, placed this species in Panthera, but see review by Hemmer, 1972, Mamm. Species, 20:1- 5, and Heptner and Naumov, 1972, [Mammals of the Soviet Union], Vol. 2(2):211, who retained the genus Uncia for this species, as do OLR and NAN.

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered.
