Hystrix cristata Linnaeus, 1758. Syst. Nat., 10th ed., 1:56.

TYPE LOCALITY: Italy, near Rome.

DISTRIBUTION: Morocco to Egypt; Senegal to Ethiopia and N. Tanzania; Sicily, Italy, Albania, and N. Greece (European populations possibly introduced).

COMMENT: Includes galeata; see Corbet, 1978:159, and Corbet and Jones, 1965, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1965:285-300.

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix III (Ghana).

ISIS NUMBER: 5301410017002003001 as H. cristata.
