Spermophilus mexicanus

Description

Spermophilus mexicanus (Erxleben, 1777). Syst. Regn. Anim., 1:428.

TYPE LOCALITY: Mexico, Toluca.

DISTRIBUTION: S. New Mexico and W. Texas (U.S.A.) to Jalisco and S. Puebla (C. Mexico).

COMMENT: Subgenus Ictidomys; see Hall, 1981:394. Gromov et al., 1965:153, considered Ictidomys a distinct genus. Known to hybridize at several localities with tridecemlineatus; see Cothran et al., 1977, J. Mammal., 58:610-622.
