Notes

  • DatingYashwant Rāo I, named in this document in the Marāṭhī portion, was the third king of the Pawār dynasty at Dhār. He was born in 1724 and ruled 1736-61, dying in the Third Battle of Panipat. With the document dating to regnal year 1 (Ramaḍān 21), it can be tentatively assigned to CE 1736. One of the petitioners in the document is Fāṭimah whose name appears also in EAP1416-37 dated CE 1725.
  • Summary: Incomplete bilingual document with Persian and Marāṭhī portions, the latter mentioning Yashwant Rāo Pawār. The document is a letter or note (खत) to the court seeking affirmation of the financial aid (madad-i ma'āsh) first made, the text alleges, in Shuhūr year 1043 (CE 1642-43, for which see Martin [1977]). The grant consisted of 150 bīghā (بیگھا) of land excluded from government tax that was given to Bībī Ḥubbī and Bībī Fāṭimah, heirs of Shaykh Nūr al-Dīn, cousin of Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz, in village (موضع) Kalawat administered by the parganah. Hence, the granted land should be handed over to the above-mentioned persons in accord with earlier precedent and no-one should create any obstacle to the order.
  • Commentary: The initial grant referred to here was made, according the present document, in 1642-43 CE, which might place it in the time of Shaykh Kāley. However, 1642-43 CE is almost twenty years before the earliest known date for Shaykh Kāley. One of the petitioners in the document is Fāṭimah whose name appears earlier in EAP1416-37, dated CE 1725. In the present document, Fāṭimah and Ḥubbī are both styled the heirs (wāri) of Shaykh Nūr al-Dīn who, however, died more than three decades earlier in 1703 CE, see EAP1416-38. Shaykh Fayz̤ullah, who died about 1725 CE, was the intervening incumbent, the ommission of his name perhaps being explained by cousin Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz, probably the father of Ḥubbī and Fāṭimah. He and the village of Gulāvaṭ appear only in this document.
  • Note: The village is likely represented by the modern Gulvā (गुलवा), located east of Dhār at 22°32'34"N 75°26'10"E. Ḥubbī has not been identified otherwise.
