Training manual: Professional development program for the induction phase – a self-management training course for early career teachers

  • 1. (Autor/in)

Description

The self-management training was developed as part of the research project "The art of self-management as a teacher – A self-regulation training as a contribution to teachers’ career development" at Zurich University of Teacher Education in cooperation with Schwyz University of Teacher Education. The development was based on course elements of previous in-service training for teachers at the end of their career entry phase and on empirically tested training programs (Mattern, 2012; Schaarschmidt & Kieschke, 2007; Schäfer, 2012). Self-management training focuses on action-oriented concepts and the teaching of methods and strategies that support self-determined and goal-oriented professional action. The self-management training has a modular structure. It comprises three modules, each lasting half a day, which build on each other thematically and methodically and are conducted accordingly as a "package". In Module 1, which serves to raise awareness in dealing with professional challenges, the "‘Occupational Stress and Coping Inventory" (abbreviated AVEM-44, Schaarschmidt & Fischer, 2008) is completed and interpreted for reflection and assessment. Module 2 focuses on teaching strategies to deal with challenging situations by reflecting on behavioral and explanatory patterns and practicing problem-solving techniques. Module 3 supports teachers in setting a concrete goal for dealing with current and/or recurring challenges in their daily work life, and then implementing it step by step by means of an action plan. Module 3 also strengthens their goal commitment and persistence.
