Typing Vietnamese with CVNSS4.0 in EVKey: A Fast Method for Inputting Vietnamese Characters

The CVNSS4.0 typing method represents an alternative Vietnamese input approach that aims to improve typing efficiency compared with widely used methods such as Telex and VNI. Although the system consists of approximately 40 typing rules, it is designed to optimize keystroke sequences and reduce typing time by an estimated 15–25% under typical usage conditions.

The CVNSS4.0 method was introduced in March 2020 and was subsequently granted a copyright registration certificate (No. 1850/2020/QTG) by the Copyright Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, formally recognizing the intellectual property of the typing system.

Shortly after its introduction, the method was integrated into an online conversion tool developed by programmer Hoang Ha, currently working in Japan. This converter enables automated transformation between several Vietnamese writing representations, including CQN (Quốc Ngữ), CVN, and CVNSS4.0. The conversion system is publicly accessible at http://chuvnsongsong.com, where users can experiment with the encoding and copy the converted output for use in different digital environments.

In practical computer usage, the CVNSS4.0 typing method has been implemented within the EVKey Vietnamese input method editor (IME). EVKey incorporates an extensive shortcut dictionary, which contains a comprehensive list of nearly 30,000 syllabic combinations, including both meaningful and structurally possible syllables within the CVNSS4.0 framework. Due to the large size of this mapping table, the implementation is currently optimized specifically for the EVKey platform, while the CQN representation may be used as a simplified alternative in certain contexts.

EVKey itself is a Vietnamese input software developed by programmer Lam Quang Minh, based on the open-source codebase of UniKey, one of the most widely used Vietnamese typing tools. While inheriting the fundamental architecture of UniKey, EVKey introduces additional functionality, performance optimizations, and compatibility improvements that address several limitations present in the original software.
